COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Coldwater City Police report a bizarre attempted kidnapping incident late Friday afternoon at the local McDonald’s. Police were called to the restaurant on East Chicago Street around 5:30 p.m. after a report that someone had tried to abduct two 8-year old girls. They say the kidnapping was prevented by patrons at the business who intervened and tried to detain the male suspect. The 35-year old fled the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended about 200 yards away by city police. During his failed escape, police say the suspect stripped away his clothes and was bare naked when he was taken into custody.
The Union City man was taken to the Community Health Center of Branch County to be checked out and after being evaluated in hospital’s psych unit, was released and booked at the County Jail on charges of resisting and obstructing police, indecent exposure and dangerous drugs. Additional charges are possible pending review of the case by the Prosecutor’s Office. Police say the two children, who were not harmed, were not in any way acquainted with or related to the suspect, whose name is being withheld pending arraignment Monday in District Court. City Police were assisted by troopers from the Michigan State Police Coldwater
