QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, there were two major wrestling tournaments in the county on Saturday with Quincy hosting the Shawn Cockrell Memorial including Coldwater and Union City and at Bronson, it was the Clark Walker Invitational. At Quincy, there were 10 schools competing with Coldwater taking fourth place, Quincy fifth and Union City tenth. Addison won the tournament. Coldwater had four second place finishers in Mohammed Aljabaly, Jason Woodhams, Austin Siegel and Kegan Brown while placing fourth were Josh Powers and Kelly Anzaldua. Quincy had one champion with Nate Smith winning the gold at 171 pounds. Runners up medals were won by Jacob Massey and Luke Wiser while earning a third place finish was Tyler Smith and Dalton Hard had a fourth place showing.
For Union City, Jared Shepard had a 3-and-0 record on the day and was champion in the 130 pound weight class. And Bronson finished first at the Clark Walker Invitational. The Vikings defeated Blissfield, Bangor and South Haven and then beat Lawton 45-to-22 in the title match.
The Coldwater Junior Varsity Gymnastics team traveled to Lowell on Saturday for a 9 team invitational and finished 8th with a team total of 100.35. On the uneven bars Kala Sperbeck posted a season high score of 4.8 to lead the Lady Cardinals. On the balance beam, Jessica Weaver stuck her routine with a solid 5.8. In spite of a fall, Alex Koch led the way with a score of 6.35. On the floor exercise, Sperbeck paced the team with a strong 7.6, tying her personal best. And finishing up on the vault, Coldwater had three qualifying scores. Koch and Darien Dyer led the team, each with personal best scores of 8.05. For Dyer, the mark secured her spot in the post season for the event as it was her fourth and final qualifying score. For Koch, it was her third and she only needs 1 more to advance to Regionals. And earning her second qualifier of the season was Madison Hedstrom, with a 7.9.
On today’s limited high school schedule, there’s gymnastics with Coldwater at Tecumseh, and in girl’s basketball, it’s Tekonsha at Hillsdale Academy.
