Report: Michigan legislators, public have different education priorities

LANSING (WKZO) -- State legislators and the public agree upon the fact that the state's education system needs to improve. However, according to a new report, there is disagreement on how to fix the problems.

Lawmakers in Lansing are pushing for more on-line education and a greater number of choice schools. The report, "The Public's Agenda for Public Education," indicates that most people believe those things are important but not as critical as legislators appear to believe. Instead the pervasive thinking by the public is that teachers need more support, the state needs to strengthen the requirements it takes to become a teacher, more effort needs to be put into improving early childhood education programs and educators need to be more accountable.
