COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Branch County 9-1-1 Wednesday received at least 4 calls to have Life-Care respond to people injured in fall accidents, several of the slip and fall variety. Dr. David Rossi is an emergency room physician at Borgess Hospital.
He says they have been seeing a lot of victims from these type of mishaps, and contrary to the stereo-type, they come in all sizes and ages. He says the injuries range from the minor to the serious, like ankle or wrist sprains or sore rear-ends, but they are treating a number of broken bones with leg and hip fractures.
He says folks suffer slip and fall accidents for the same reason that motorists suffer slide offs. Moving faster on icy surfaces than is prudent. It’s a matter of people being in a hurry with their usual mindset of trying to get to places quickly and they forget to take a little extra time and to move a little slower on the snow and ice. The big difference in slip and fall accidents versus car crashes is you aren’t encased in a steel shell when you lose control.
So far 4 deaths are being blamed across the U.S. on the winter blast, including a businessman who died in a chain reaction collision this week in Muskegon County and a 70-year-old man found frozen in his unheated home in Des Plaines Illinois. There are also plenty of walking wounded out there.
