COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Roads, parking lots and sidewalks in Branch County started to turn downright dangerous last night for motorists and pedestrians as snow turned to sleet and freezing rain and it all turned to ice as it hit frozen roadways. About 1:30 this morning, temperatures inched above the freezing mark, but it didn’t come fast enough and there was enough ice laid down underneath the melting moisture and slush that extremely slippery conditions remained, especially on secondary and side roads. The end result was all schools in the county and several dozen school systems in the area being closed today.
Tomorrow, mid to upper 50’s and heavy rains are in the offing and then it’s back into the deep freeze beginning Thursday. The expected significant showers Tuesday and Wednesday prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch for Coldwater and Branch County from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 11 a.m. Wednesday.
