For the first time in 20 seasons, Michigan will most likely be number one in the nation when the new AP poll is released this afternoon, thanks to the second ranked Wolverines 74-to-60 win last night at Illinois. Michigan had a chance to become the top team in the country two Sundays ago, but the Wolverines fell in their only loss to arch-rival Ohio State in Columbus. Duke, currently the No. 1 squad in the nation, opened the door for a new top team when the Blue Devils were routed by Miami-Florida earlier in the week. Trey Burke tallied 19 points, five assists and five rebounds last night for the Wolverines.
The 19-and-1 Wolverines continued their best start to a season in program history and moved into a tie for first place atop the Big Ten standings with Indiana, which will host Michigan Saturday night. In between, the Wolverines play Northwestern Wednesday night at Crisler Center.
