COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - How many homeless are there in Branch County? It’s a difficult number to come to grips with but this week the effort will be there to get at least a glimpse of how much of an issue it is and you can help. The Homelessness Housing and Assistance Act from HUD, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, requires each county to conduct an annual point in time count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons in Michigan
The Department of Commerce provides survey forms for counties and agencies to use for their counts. Counties can opt to use their own forms to conduct their homeless count with the condition, and it’s a mandate, that the count happen during the last week of January. If you know of those that are homeless, you’re asked to please call 278-SAFE…that’s 278-7233. Local officials, including the Branch County Community Network, say it’s an important effort so state funding authorities can receive a true depiction of our area and the BCCN says it can make a huge difference on the number of people that can be helped in the future.
