DETROIT (WKZO) -- The Detroit City Council did not vote on the proposed lease of Belle Isle by the state, opting to send the issue back to a committee for further review.
Only three members thought the issue should receive a vote today. A total of six council members were needed to push the matter forward. The move came after another round of comments from the council over the hotly contested issue.
The plan would call for the State of Michigan to turn the island into a state park, perform badly needed upgrades, and make those driving onto the island pay an annual fee of eleven dollars. Belle Isle would remain in control of the City of Detroit during the lease period.
