State Police solve Butler Township break-in case, arrest Kalamazoo couple

BUTLER TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) - Michigan State Police say a young Kalamazoo couple, including a former Quincy man, has been busted in a Branch County break in case with the investigation also shedding light on a crime in Kalamazoo Township. 20-year old Justin Pepper and 17-year old Hannah Smith were arrested in Kalamazoo.

According to authorities, Pepper and Smith forced their way through the front door a home on Dean Road in Branch County’s Butler Township last Wednesday and stole a large collection of coins along with a credit card, which they used that day to buy groceries at a Wal-Mart in Battle Creek. Store video surveillance also showed them dumping the ripped off money in a coins for cash machine.  In addition, a background check revealed Smith was wanted by Kalamazoo Township Police for felony forgery.

State Police say they obtained confessions from both subjects and on Thursday, Pepper was booked in Branch County while Smith was jailed in Kalamazoo County.
