ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) - The Board of Directors of Cameron Memorial Community Hospital recently approved the implementation of a physician employment strategy. While the hospital has previously contracted with physicians for the delivery of certain services at Cameron (e.g. anesthesia, emergency department, hospitalist, pathology, radiology, and Urgent Care services), under the new initiative, the hospital will have the opportunity to enter into employment relationships with physicians.
Through implementation of the physician employment strategy, Cameron expects to begin hiring primary care physicians, along with certain specialty physicians
Across the United States, more than 50% of practicing physicians are now employed by hospitals and health systems. Issues that have led currently practicing physicians to consider leaving independent practice and becoming employed include: declining reimbursement, increasing malpractice costs, increasing regulatory burdens, increasing expense and complexity to operate a practice, increasing expense and complexity of information technology, and the uncertainty of health care reform. In northeastern Indiana, there has been a rapid increase over the last several years in the number of physicians who have left independent practice for employment. As well, the vast majority of physicians finishing training programs are seeking employment vs. independent practice.
“Cameron looks forward to maintaining strong, positive relationships with our current community physicians, whether they remain in independent practice, or choose to be employed,” said Greg Burns, Cameron President and Chief Executive Officer. “And, we believe that having physicians employed by Cameron Hospital will be beneficial as we look forward to serving the needs of patients, their family members and the communities of the tri-state region well into the future.”
Cameron will immediately begin implementing the physician employment strategy with the recruitment of a new full-time physician practice administrator.
