LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Maybe the time is right to institute county-wide school districts. That’s the thinking of State Superintendent of Schools Mike Flannagan. He says too many school districts in Michigan are in the red or on their way there and something has to be done, so he's sent a letter to lawmakers proposing that functions like transportation could be handled at a county level, allowing districts more latitude to address other issues.
Under the plan, there would still be local school district administrators and anywhere from 50 to upwards of 100 changes would have to made to laws to accommodate the idea. That means that moving forward with any plan would be no small undertaking.
