BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) - The Air National Guard base in Battle Creek will be that in name only after today. Their last c-21 jet is flying out never-to-return as their mission changes from one of maintaining and flying airplanes to a mission that just a few years ago didn’t exist. Their new plane will be the Mq-9 Reaper drones and they won’t be stationed in Battle Creek. Just the pilots will. The remote controlled planes will be stationed where ever they are needed, and their pilots will be controlling them from the base near Kellogg Field.
The staff there will have to undergo quite a bit of retraining and they will have to have a lot of new equipment installed before they will become operational.
The staff will gather on the tarmac, to see the last plane off today.
