LAPORTE COUNTY, INDIANA (WKZO) -- Park officials say they have never seen anything like it.
A 6-year-old boy playing on the dunes and standing in a hole suddenly vanished under a wave of sand that rolled in at the Indiana Dunes National Park near Michigan City, Indiana.
They say he was buried under 11 feet of sand. It took three hours but they managed to dig him out using heavy equipment.
They say an air pocket in the sand apparently allowed him to survive the ordeal.
He is in critical condition in a Chicago Children’s Hospital but responding to simple commands.
