COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - On the local sports scene, in summer league baseball, the three day Mickey Mantle AABC State Tournament hosted by Coldwater wrapped up yesterday with a pair of championship round games and the host Coldwater Redbirds dropped a pair of contests to finish in fourth place. In the semi-finals, Coldwater fell 10-to-7 to the Battle Creek Scorpions. Brendan Spangler was the starting pitcher for the Redbirds and went two plus innings followed by Jesse Mangat who worked three and a third innings. Spangler led the way at the plate with a solo home run and a double and three rbi’s. Michael Gillette and Shane Dunn each added rbi singles. Coldwater then lost 9-to-6 to the Great Lakes Lightning. Gillette started and suffered the defeat with two and a third innings on the mound. Austin Krzeminski went 2-for-2 with two singles and 2 rbi’s. Brayton Rzepka had a 2-run double while Randall Linton added two singles and scored a run.
The Michigan Bulls won the tournament and that’s the team that the Redbirds will take on this week in the first round of the Mickey Mantle North Central Regional in Coldwater with the Bulls and Redbirds game scheduled for the opening day of the Regional at 6 p.m. Thursday at Lowe Field.
