GRAND RAPIDS (WTVB) - Grand Rapids-based Spartan Stores is set for a big expansion. The grocery chain is merging with Nash Finch Company of Minnesota to create one of the largest grocery chains in the country. The all-stock merger is valued at around 1.3-billion dollars, and Spartan Stores shareholders will own nearly 58-percent of the new company.
Spartan distributes products to 390 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio and 102 corporate owned stores in Michigan. Locally, Spartan Stores operates Family Fare stores in Coldwater, Marshall, Battle Creek and Albion.
