Coldwater to join to athletic conference in 2014-2015 school year, wrestling clinic set for this weekend

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - it’s now official. Coldwater will be joining a new athletic conference with plans for competition to begin a year from now for the 2014-2015 school year. Coldwater Athletic Director Dianne VandenHout revealed yesterday that all of the school systems interested in the formation of the league have approved being part of the new conference. Leaving the Big 16 Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference, or SMAC, along with Coldwater will be Harper Creek and Marshall. The other schools ready to make up the new conference are Pennfield, Jackson Lumen Christi, Parma Western, Charlotte, and Jackson Northwest.  A league name has not been totally agreed upon but many of the athletic directors appear to be leaning toward the possibility of calling it the "Interstate 8 Conference”. Coldwater joined the SMAC in 2001 when the former Twin Valley Conference disbanded.

Also on the high school sports scene, Coldwater Varity boy’s golf coach John Petzko says Nick Waterbury was named individual Academic All-State by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association. The award capped Waterbury’s senior year when he was also captain of Coldwater’s golf team for the 2013 season. The first practice and tryout sessions for the upcoming Fall high school sports season in Michigan begin in less than three weeks with football practice starting on Monday, August 12th and then on August 14th, it will be the opening practice day for boy’s soccer, volleyball, boy’s tennis, cross country, and girl’s golf. Middle School fall sports practices are allowed to start up on Monday, August 26th.

The Coldwater High School wrestling program will be hosting a wrestling clinic featuring three University of Iowa championship wrestler s this weekend. Registration begins at 8:30 am tomorrow, with the clinic running from 9 am-4 pm.The on-line link for the camp flyer is  http://coldwaterschools.org/images/stories/athletics/wr-hawkeye-camp-2013.pdf
