DETROIT - Doug Fister delivered arguably his best pitching performance of the season last night at Comerica Park, giving up one unearned run on three hits, one walk, and 6 strikeouts over 8 innings as the Detroit Tigers doubled up the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in the opening game of a three-game interleague series. Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his 10th save. Alex Avila provided all the offense the Tigers needed with a 2-run double in the 5th.
Tonight in game 2, Max Scherzer gets the start for the Tigers. Cliff Lee was scheduled to start for the Phillies, but he’s been scratched with a sore neck; Raul Valdes will get the spot start out of the bullpen.
Detroit remains 3 games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central race. Former Tiger Ryan Raburn uncorked a 3-run walk-off homer in the 11th to lead the Indians past Texas 11-8.
The AL Central cellar-dwelling White Sox lost to Kansas City 5-1, while the Cubs edged the Giants 3-2 out west.
