Tigers pick up closer Joses Veras from Houston, host Washington Nationals tonight

Houston Astros Jose Veras pitches against the Texas Rangers in the ninth inning of their MLB American League baseball game in Arlington, Tex

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers had the day off yesterday but they made news with tomorrow’s trade deadline approaching by acquiring Astros closer Jose Veras for a minor-league outfielder prospect and a player to be named later. Veras had 19 saves for Houston this season and the 32-year old right hander has 44 strikeouts in 43 innings with only 14 walks and a 2.93 ERA. Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said Veras provides depth in the bullpen. Dombrowski also might provide more headlines with possible additional deals before Wednesday’s non-waiver 4 p.m. trading window closes. Detroit could be in the market for someone to play shortstop in the event Jhonny Peralta is suspended soon for allegedly violating baseball’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The Tigers lead in the American League Central slipped from three down to 2-and-a-half games over the second place Indians after Cleveland last night got a walk-off pinch-hit home run from Jason Giambi in the bottom of the ninth for their fifth straight win in a 3-to-2 victory over the White Sox.

Detroit tonight starts a brief 2-game interleague series at Comerica Park against the Washington Nationals with Anibal Sanchez on the mound for the Tigers against the National’s Stephen Strasburg.

The Chicago Cubs last night were blanked by the Brewers 5-to-0 in the opener of a 4-game series at Wrigley Field.
