Lawmakers look at possibility of creating an animal abusers registry in Michigan

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Agencies like the Branch County Coalition against Domestic Violence have been pushing for the creation of an animal abuser registry like the state’s sex offender registry. There was a hearing on such a proposal Tuesday in the Michigan Senate. Senator Rick Jones took testimony on a bill yesterday that would prevent citizens with a record of animal abuse from adopting.  It would give animal shelters free access to criminal histories.

Jones said as a former sheriff, he knows that many people that abuse animals eventually graduate to people. It’s called Logan’s law after a Huskie that was attacked in its kennel by someone who splashed the dog with acid. There had been proposals to create an animal abuser registry like the state’s sex offender registry.  This may be a simpler alternative. It’s still just a proposal.
