Coldwater tops Mendon 5-1 in baseball tune-up, Sadie Wonders wins college award

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in baseball, Coldwater yesterday played a final warm up game in advance of this weekend’s state tournament regionals and the host Cardinals defeated Mendon 5-to-1. Cam Sielken, the third of four pitchers, picked up the victory, with two innings of two hit relief work. Jordan Butler earned the save, tossing a scoreless seventh. At the plate, Ryan Mock went 2-for-3 with an rbi, Brendan Spangler had a hit with two rbi’s, and Grant Mauer added an rbi single. Coldwater will take a 21-and-13 record into their Division Two Regional Semi-Final game Saturday morning at ten o’clock against Otsego at Stevensville Lakeshore.

Today in boy’s golf, a pair of players from Bronson, Robert O’Rourke and Jonah Houtz, will tee it up in the Division Three Regional on the Medalist Golf Course at Olivet after they qualified for the individuals competition following last week’s district tournament. In Division Two, Coldwater advanced as a team out of their district and tomorrow, the Cardinals will be in the Regional at the Marshall Country Club. Today on the Coaches Corner, we’ll have a final look at Union City baseball with coach John Bain.

And congratulations to Sadie Wonders of the Class of 2009 at Bronson high school for her being named this week a recipient of an Atlantic 10 Conference Postgraduate Scholarship following four seasons as a standout member of the University of Dayton women’s rowing team. Wonders, who was the Flyer’s rowing MVP this year, is a two time All-Academic honoree for the Atlantic 10 and was a Dayton Scholar-Athlete Award winner all four years at Dayton. She majored in accounting and is enrolled in the MBA/Dual ACC graduate degree program beginning this Fall.
