Max Scherzer Takes the Mound for the Tigers in Game 2 vs. Texas Rangers
Max Scherzer Takes the Mound for the Tigers in Game 2 vs. Texas Rangers

The Tigers yesterday afternoon took the rubber game of their three game series with the Rays in a 5-to-2 win over Tampa Bay at Comerica Park. Victor Martinez homered and had 3 RBI’s to back seven stellar innings from Max Scherzer, who improved to 8-and-0. Scherzer struck out nine while allowing just four hits and one run. Jose Valverde pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save. The Tigers outhit the Rays 13-to-6 including three singles from Miguel Cabrera, who also picked up his major league leading 66th RBI.

Detroit now leads the American League Central by 2-and-a-half games over the second place Cleveland Indians, who were idle yesterday. The Tigers tonight open a 3-game series against the Indians in Detroit.

The White Sox lost for the ninth time in ten games when they fell 5-to-4 in ten innings to the A’s last night in Chicago. The Cubs had the day off Thursday.

In last night’s Major League Draft, the Tigers had the 20th overall selection and picked Florida University pitcher Jonathon Crawford, a 21-year old right hander described by Detroit scouts as having a power arm with a plus slider.
