Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who earned his 14th win of the season Friday, September 14, 2012, with a 4-0 win over Cleveland.

The Tigers scored five early runs and held on to top Cleveland 7-5 last night in Detroit behind seven innings from Justin Verlander. The victory for the first place Tigers over the Indians increased their lead in the American League Central over second place Cleveland to 3-and-a-half games. Verlander struck out six and gave up three runs for his eighth win.  The scoring for Detroit started in the second inning with 3 runs beginning with a solo home run for Victor Martinez, who added two other hits, including a double, to help send the slumping Indians to their fifth straight loss. Torii Hunter also had a double as part of his 3 hit night. Detroit closer Jose Valverde held on through a shaky ninth and a chorus of boos after allowing a pair of solo home runs and then a single to put the tying run at the plate before enticing a ground out to end it.

4:08 pm Saturday afternoon is the starting time for game two of this 3 game series with Rick Porcello on the mound for the Tigers.

The White Sox slides goes on as they lost 4-to-3 last night at home to the A’s and the Cubs were shutout by the Pirates 2-to-0 Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
