COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It’s not an overcrowding emergency yet at the Branch County Jail, but it’s been quite a while since the lockup had over 150 prisoners behind bars such as is the case this morning. 30 people have been booked at the jail over the last 4 days. That brought the number of prisoners today to 151. The rated capacity of the jail is 142. Regulations require that if the inmate population exceeds the capacity for 7 straight days, an overcrowding emergency has to be declared, necessitating the early release of prisoners.
The County has come close several times this spring to that emergency status. Previous to Monday, the population dating back to the end of last week was 141 Friday, 144 Saturday, and 145 on Sunday. The number of inmates on Mondays usually goes up because that’s also sentencing day in Branch County Circuit Court.
