Humane Society still has concerns with Farm Bill proposals

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVB) - The Farm Bill currently before Congress has raised some concerns with the Humane Society. The president of the Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle says there are several issues they'd like to see addressed in the Farm Bill, but for Michigan they're chiefly concerned about chicken egg production.  Specifically, they'd like to see the space allotted for hens increased-- and he says that could be better for farmers and animals alike. He says there are 280 million laying hens in the United States, located in what they call battering cages where each bird gets a little less than sheet of paper for living space. They would like to have that space increased for a better science based housing system for the birds.

The Humane Society wants to see language that would provide that inserted into the Farm Bill, and that also has the backing of the United Egg Producers and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
