LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The bill that would expand Medicaid health care coverage in Michigan is expected to be considered by the state Senate this week, although a vote on the legislation was tabled Tuesday. Veterans have a major stake in the measure according to the group, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, which said it will provide health insurance to as many as 20,000 uninsured vets and their spouses. They also say there are 44,100 uninsured veterans and 19,900 uninsured spouses of veterans in Michigan. About 1 in 10 veterans across the country lack health insurance. Overall, more than 500,000 residents would be added to the federal program if the bill is approved.

Medicaid primarily has been given to pregnant women, those caring for a disabled person, or someone who has a disability.  The measure is supported by Governor Rick Snyder but has little support from Republicans in the state legislature. G-O-P Representative Ken Kurtz of Coldwater voted against it last week when it passed in the House. If the law is adopted, it must still be approved by the federal government.
