COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Branch County Relay-for-Life 2013 is happening this weekend in Coldwater at Heritage Park with the American Cancer Society fundraising event offering the community a way to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against a disease that takes too much from too many. The walk laps begin at Noon. The survivor registration opens at 4:30 this afternoon with the opening ceremony at 5:30, the Survivors Lap at 6 p.m., the Luminaria Ceremony at around 9 p.m. or dusk and we’ll have that live on the radio. And then the closing ceremony is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
A special addition to the 16th annual event in Coldwater is an opportunity for anyone who has never had cancer and is between the ages of 30 and 65 to take part in Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) and help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. The enrollment is between 5 and 9 p.m. To enroll in the study, individuals complete a brief written survey, provide a waist measurement, and give a small blood sample at the Relay enrollment site. It takes around 20-to-30 minutes. Then they complete their enrollment at home where they fill out a more comprehensive baseline survey. Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years. They hope to enroll between 135 and 150 people this evening at Heritage Park.
