The Tigers trailed Boston last night by one heading into the bottom of the 9th inning when Jhonny Peralta connected for a two-run, walk-off home run to give the Tigers a 4-3 win over the Red Sox in a battle of division leaders at Comerica Park.Peralta’s line drive over the fence in left field came off Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey, who suffered his fourth blow save of the season after walking Victor Martinez to open the inning.
Drew Smyly grabbed the win for Detroit, pitching two shutout innings out of the bullpen. The Central leading Tigers picked up a half game on idle Cleveland and are now 4 games up on the second place Indians. Detroit tonight will have Doug Fister on the mound for game two of the 4-game series with Boston.
The White Sox were doubled up by the Twins 8-to-4 yesterday afternoon, giving Minnesota a sweep of the 3-game series at Target Field. And the Cubs lost 6-to-1 last night at St. Louis.
