COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County summer league baseball action, the Coldwater Redbirds 16-U Mickey Mantle team opened its season yesterday, playing a pair of games in hosting the CCABC sponsored Third Annual Coldwater Summer Classic, which continues through this afternoon at Lowe and Borden Fields. The Redbirds won their first game, beating the Maroon Silver team 2-to-1. Brandon Lewis was the winning pitcher, tossing 6-innings of 7-hit ball with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks with one unearned run allowed. Addison Duda pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Brendan Spangler had an rbi double and Michael Gillette provided the game winning rbi single. Randall Linton added a triple and a single with a run scored and Brayton Rzepka doubled and scored a run.
Coldwater then lost 7-to-6 to the Kalamazoo Titans. Morgan Sims suffered the defeat in relief of Rzepka. It was a quality start for Rzepka, who surrendered just one earned run on 3 hits over 4-and-two-thirds innings. Sims allowed six runs on six hits in the loss. Linton had another triple and Lewis had a pair of hits with an rbi. Rzepka and Sims each doubled and scored a run. Spangler added another double and Jesse Mangat had an rbi single.
