COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It’s happened again. For the fourth straight year, the Branch County Relay-for-Life American Cancer Society fund drive has raised has least $100,000 for cancer research and support programs. The 24-hour event ended at Noon Saturday at Heritage Park in Coldwater with a little extra drama at the closing ceremonies as Cheryl Back, the Relay chairperson for the last two years, announced the donations were just barely shy of the coveted six figure total. Back asked for one more giving moment from those who remained for the end of the program and the audience easily covered the 82 dollar shortage with more than $250 in last minute contributions to make it a 100-grand-plus success.
The top friends and family fund raising team for this year’s 16th annual Branch County Relay-for-Life was the McCann’s Cancelled Cancer Clan and their Star Wars camp site while the top business-church group fund raiser was the Community Health Center of Branch County. The first place overall site award went to Heather’s Homey’s while the best decorated that went along with the Join the Fight with a Movie Night theme was Community Unlimited and their Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles site. The Best Baton honor went to Team Terry and the Team Spirit Loudmouth award winner was the Coldwater United Methodist Church.
