ATHENS, MI (WTVB) - A huge fireball erupted yesterday afternoon in northwest Branch County when a diesel fuel tanker truck and car collided at the M-60/M-66 intersection and both vehicles were consumed by flames and destroyed. Authorities say it’s a miracle everyone in both vehicles was able to scramble to safety and there were no injuries.
State Police at the Coldwater Post said the Ford Focus failed to yield after stopping on M-66 or Athens Road and struck the tanker truck hauling 28-hundred gallons of fuel. M-60 was closed for around 6 hours after the collision that was because of extensive damage to the roadway. The accident around 3:30 p.m. Fire Departments from Union City, Sherwood, Leonidas, Burlington and Athens all responded to the scene.
Troopers said the woman driving the car with her son as a passenger, were only identified as local residents, and she was cited. The truck driver is from Texas.
