Branch County seniors named Detroit Free Press Scholar Athletes

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - Each spring, the Detroit Free Press asks Michigan high schools to send the newspaper the school’s top senior male and female scholar athletes to be honored as Free Press Scholar Athletes. More than 390 schools responded. Making the list from Coldwater were Nick Waterbury with a 4.09 GPA while competing in tennis, golf, and basketball along with BreeAnn Spangler with a 4.19 GPA while playing volleyball and basketball. From Bronson, there’s Jonah Houtz, a golfer and tennis player with a 3.98 GPA and Kylei Ratkowski with a 3.96 GPA while being on the volleyball and basketball teams. From Union City, Jesse Anderson ran track and cross-country while earning a 3.98 GPA and Brooke Johnson had a 3.91 GPA while competing in basketball, volleyball and track. And at Tekonsha, Matt Katz played football, basketball and track while compiling a 4.24 GPA and Mackenzie Norman had a 4.16 GPA while finding time to compete in volleyball, basketball, softball and soccer. There were no students from Quincy listed in the article published on Monday.

BreeAnn Spangler is in Orlando, Florida this week playing with a West Michigan team in the 2013 AAU Girl’s Junior National Championships. Her team had a 1-and-2 record Tuesday, leaving them with a 6-1-and-2 mark so far in the tournament. They are still in the running for a top ten finish in the 18 club division, which includes 115 teams. Spangler will be playing Division One college volleyball after signing a letter of intent last fall with Indiana State University.
