Be aware of lightning danger this summer around Branch County

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Scattered and isolated thunderstorms stay in the forecast for Branch County through tomorrow night and again on Monday and as you think about staying safe with the possibility of heavy or strong storms, consider the fact that Michigan ranks number two out of 50 states for the highest number of lightning deaths and injuries, over 700, since the 1950’s.  That figure stands out because Michigan is listed as only being ranked 33 out of 50 states in the actual number of lightning strikes.

So if have plans for golf, boating, fishing, camping, farming, baseball or playing soccer, be careful. When it comes to being exposed to lightning, those are the most dangerous activities. Women are less likely to be hit by lightning while the most likely to be struck are males ages 12-to-20.
