Jimmy Howard came close to his second shutout of the season as Detroit edged Colorado 2-to-1 last night at Joe Louis Arena. Howard finished with 36 saves while Johan Franzen and Niklas Kronwall both scored first period goals for the Red Wings, who are 4-1-and-1 over their last six games. The Avalanche scored their lone goal with 90 seconds left in regulation as they lost for the fifth time in 6 games.
Howard said he hates to lose the shutout but two points are more importantTomorrow night, the Red Wings host Edmonton. And Chicago last night stretched its record streak to 23 games with at least a point in a 5-to-3 decision over Minnesota at United Center.
The Blackhawks improved to 20-0-and-3 with their tenth straight win, which also set a new franchise record. The Big Ten on Tuesday granted Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner a fifth year of eligibility. Gardner, now a redshirt junior, suffered a back injury during his freshman season and played in only three games. He became the Wolverines starting quarterback for the last third of the 2012 season after first stringer Denard Robinson hurt his elbow. Gardner began last season as one of Michigan’s wide receivers.
And Michigan State announced yesterday that the Spartans will start their 2013 season with a prime-time televised game under the lights in East Lansing against Western Michigan on Friday, August 30th. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 31st
