BRONSON, MI (WTVB) - No names have been released and there’s no information yet available on what led to Wednesday’s serious injury crash on U.S. 12 in Branch County’s Batavia Township. The two drivers were alone in their vehicles when they collided east of Batavia Road around 8:40 a.m. A 19-year old woman from Bronson driving a Dodge Stratus was trapped for a time in the wreckage before being freed with the help of Bronson firefighters. She was flown from the scene by Air Care to Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo and according to State Police, was listed in guarded but stable condition. A 36-year old Coldwater man driving a Nissan Pathfinder SUV was taken by ambulance to the Community Health Center of Branch County with minor injuries.
Roads in the area were covered with patches of ice at the time of the accident. Troopers said alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been a factor in the collision. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and their airbags did deploy.
State Police tell us they may not be releasing the identities of the drivers, which initially were withheld until relatives were notified. The Coldwater Fire Department also assisted at the scene setting up a landing zone for the helicopter. U.S. 12 between Wheeler and Batavia Roads was closed for about an hour following crash.
