Coldwater schools and police on alert after report of stranger offering candy to kids to get into car

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Coldwater School officials say an incident Thursday morning brought a response of increased police presence at schools throughout the school district yesterday. School Superintendent Dr. Tina Kerr said they received a report that two elementary students walking to Max Larsen Elementary School had a vehicle stop near them and offered them candy.

Kerr said the children wisely walked away toward the school, and immediately told what happened to Max Larsen staff who then contacted 911. Schools officials are investigating the report and say they’re working closely with the Coldwater Police Department to find out what actually occurred.

Kerr said since a limited amount information was available yesterday morning, they decided to take a number of safety precautions, keeping all elementary students inside during recess and having staff members walking students to their busses at the end of the day. According to Kerr, Coldwater Police were on the alert to have officers at the schools and to monitor neighborhoods during dismissal.

Kerr’s message about what happened and what was being done was sent out by robo-call to the parents of students. They were told the safety of students is always of the greatest importance, and assured school officials would continue to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action.
