New study on Daylight Saving Time

ST. JOSEPH, MI (WKZO) - Did you set your clocks ahead over the weekend?   If you didn’t then you are an hour late. When Congressman Fred Upton co-sponsored the legislation to extend daylight savings time in 2005, the goal was to make better use of that extra hour of sunlight, to shift everyone’s day and to in theory, save on energy costs.

A government study found that there is a net energy savings of electricity of around half a billion dollars and 2.9 million gallons of oil, although such studies have been disputed.

A new study done by Chimura Economics suggests that the loss of an hour of sleep costs the economy at least 434-million dollars in lost productivity. Lead economist Chris Chimura considered such factors as increased heart attacks, workplace injuries and "cyber-loafing" on the Monday following the time change.
