COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, it was a school record shattering performance in gymnastics for coldwater senior Kylie Dudek at Saturday’s individual state finals at Plymouth Canton High. Dudek finished second in the state in division one, just two tenths of a point behind the all-around champion from Troy.

In gymnastics, the divisions refer to the difficulty of routines performed, not the size of the school with division one the top competition. Dudek’s best score came on the uneven bars with a 9.8 earning her a first place medal with a new school record. Next best was her 9.7 on the floor exercise, again a new school record and a third place finish in the finals. Dudek placed seventh on the vault and 22nd on the balance beam with her all around total of 37.5 the highest of any cardinal gymnast in school history.

The Coldwater girl’s basketball annual awards banquet was yesterday. Junior Kenzie Galloway was chosen Most Valuable Player. Junior Meghan Schorfhaar was named defensive player of the year. Most sportsmanlike was junior André Sowles, most improved sophomore Shelby Bowers and junior Kellie Pierucki was presented the coach’s award, given to the player who is a good teammate and often the hardest working player who may not get the most time on the floor but is able to get the most out of her minutes in the game.

The winter season events for county teams concluded over the weekend with the Quincy Boys losing their Class C Basketball District title game Friday to Schoolcraft and then the gymnastics finals on Saturday. So it’s on to the transition to the spring season starting today with tryouts and practices for baseball, softball, girls soccer, track & field, boys golf and girls tennis.  The MHSAA basketball tournaments continue with the girls season wrapping up this week beginning with tomorrow night’s quarterfinals and then the final four tipping off Thursday at the Breslin Center. On the boys side, it’s the regionals this week with the semi-finals tonight and the finals on Wednesday. That includes the Marshall Class B Regional with Sturgis vs. Undefeated Stevensville Lakeshore in tonight’s first semi-final contest followed by Harper Creek against South Haven. And tonight in the Constantine Class C Regional, Schoolcraft, which eliminated Quincy, takes on Bloomingdale while White Pigeon battles Bridgman in the other bracket.

Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s a final look at Coldwater wrestling with Coach Jake Lenhardt.
