MARSHALL, MI (WTVB) - The Michigan Department of Community Health says the drinking water in private wells along the Kalamazoo River where a massive Enbridge oil spill happened in 2010 is safe, at least so far. Tests of samples from dozens of wells show no threat from any chemicals that may have been part of the Canadian heavy crude that spilled along the river and was washed up on banks by high water levels.

 Environmentalists and experts say those chemicals migrate through the soil slowly, and may eventually reach those wells.  Iron and nickel were detected in a few wells, but not at dangerous levels. It’s believed those elements were in the soil and ground water before the spill.
