COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The animals have an excuse but there’s none for anglers risking their lives yesterday, ice fishing on Cemetery Lake on Coldwater’s west side. Authorities continue to warn people to stay off the ice, whatever’s left of it after the most recent mild spell of weather with readings last weekend in the 50’s.
Last Friday, late in the afternoon, Coldwater firemen made an animal ice rescue between North Lake and Randall Lake on the North chain of lakes. Two dogs were lured into open water 800 feet off shore by a bevy of swans. One of the retrievers didn’t break through the ice but the other one did and firemen used an ice sled to reach the dog and pulled it out of the water to safety. The Fire Department responds to such calls that come into 911 because if they didn’t, people end up making their own rescue attempts and those trying to save their animals could end up having to be rescued by the very people trying to save the dogs in the first place.
