COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, it’s been a chilly start to get ready for the spring schedule of activities with cold weather for tryouts and the first practices last week and more of the same forecast for this week.
The first varsity events are coming up Friday for Coldwater, both indoors, with a girls tennis tournament, the Ramblewood Invitational and in track, the Huron River Relays at Eastern Michigan University.
Meanwhile, the high school basketball season in Michigan will conclude this week with the MHSAA boys tournament finishing up beginning with tomorrow’s quarterfinals and then it’s the Final Four tipping off Thursday at the Breslin Center, where the girls season ended with Saturday’s championship games. The four title winners were Grand Haven in Class-A, Goodrich in Class-B, Manchester in Class-C and St. Ignace in Class-D. Noteworthy were repeat champions in Class-A and Class-B while St. Ignace ended Waterford Our Lady’s streak of 3 straight Class-D titles. Tomorrow’s Sweet 16 games for the boys will see 4 schools from the region still alive in the tournament as March Magic continues for Schoolcraft, Stevensville-Lakeshore, Jackson Lumen Christi, and Climax-Scotts.
Today on the Coaches Corner, we’ll begin our preview of the early spring schedules for county teams, starting with Coldwater.
