COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - February turned out to be a nice turnaround month financially at the Community Health Center of Branch County. The hospital in Coldwater started out 2013 with a nearly 100-thousand dollar loss for the first month of the year. However, last month was a far different story. Lindy Cox, Finance Committee Chairman, presented the numbers at Monday’s meeting of the hospital Board of Trustees and reported a net income of 261-thousand dollars in February. There were over 18-hundred emergency room visits last month at the Health Center and nearly four thousand total for the year so far as of mid-March.
Michigan's health care industry directly employs 558,800 people in Michigan, according to a Partnership for Michigan's Health report. Michigan's direct health care workers earn $31.4 billion a year in wages, salaries and benefits. Include indirect jobs, and it jumps to $47 billion, making it the state's largest private sector employer. Michigan Health & Hospital Association President Spencer Johnson said a recent study has shown that, if the state Legislature takes the necessary steps to expand the Medicaid program, the health care sector will generate an additional 18,000 Michigan jobs that will further improve the economy in the state, individual regions and local communities.
