COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in a varsity only girls soccer match, Coldwater started its season last night at home with a 2-0 shutout victory over Hanover-Horton. The opening goal came about 13 minutes into the game when Paige Holicki scored off a free kick from Maggie Morrison, who picked up the assist. Kait Vella closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal midway through the 2nd half. Coldwater outshot Hanover Horton 15-4 on the night with goalkeeper Shelby Bowers making 3 saves.
The Lady Cards are now off for spring break, returning to action Tuesday, April 9th for a varsity-only contest at home against Hillsdale.
Yesterday in track, Union City opened its season indoors at the Charger Preview meet at Hillsdale College with a runner up finish for the girl’s team against a dozen other schools while the boys took fourth place against ten other teams.
In the girl’s action, Union City’s 83 points were just two behind first place Marshall. Brooke Johnson finished first in the 200 meter dash and high jump and also ran on Union City’s winning 400 meter relay team along with Katie Birch, Allison Foster and Rachel Sutherland. Birch took third place in the 800 and 1600 meter runs, Sutherland was third in the 400 meter dash, Jasmine McIntosh was second in the 60 meter hurdles, Kaitlyn Mitchell was second in the shot put, and Lindsey Fisk was third in the long jump. In the boy’s meet, Hillsdale was first with 89 points while Union City earned 57 points in fourth place. Josh Holton won the 60 meter dash and was runner-up in the 400 meter dash. Jesse Anderson won the 60-meter hurdles race while Josh Kinney was third in the long jump. And the Chargers won the silver medal in the 400 meter relay.
Branch County teams are off now until after spring break week with the schedule picking up again on Saturday April Sixth when Coldwater starts its baseball season at home with the SMB&T Invitational.
There were baseball and softball doubleheaders scheduled for today with Bronson at Quincy but they were cancelled yesterday as were the j-v games at Bronson.
