Michigan veterans to receive more benefits from the state

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Michigan Governor Rick Snyder Thursday signed into law a spending bill that sets aside $3 million to connect veterans with health care, education and other available benefits. The move comes as Michigan attempts to climb out of its 50th ranking nationally for assisting veterans in acclimating into society after serving in the armed forces.  According to the MIRS news service, veteran unemployment in Michigan was up to 30 percent last year. Former Senator Bill Hardiman, now with the Department of Human Services (DHS), told Senate committee last year that veterans were fending for themselves in the woods north of Gaylord  "We need to do a better job for our veterans," Snyder said. "What this appropriation does is move dollars that would be in next year's budget so we can get going on projects today."
