ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- Five University of Michigan unions ratified contracts before the state's new right-to-work law took effect Thursday.

U of M reportedly agreed to early negotiations with the unions under the belief that union members would be more open to making concessions ahead of right-to-work laws taking effect.  The four-and-five year contracts with the university may cause an expensive backlash, though.

Legislators are threatening to withhold tens of millions of dollars in financial aid to institutions which help unions skirt the new law.
