Quincy Wins In Soccer and Baseball


QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, last night in girls soccer, Quincy was a 2-to-0 winner at home over Jonesville in an Independent Soccer League conference matchup. Both goals came in the first half beginning at the 30:04 mark when Kenzie Moore scored off a scramble for a corner kick. Then at the 17:39 mark, Liz Counterman made it 2-to-0 with a goal on a through pass from Angelica Sussex. Quincy outshot Jonesville 17-11. Sara Ward had 6 saves on the night for the Orioles, who improved to 6-2 overall with a 4-and-1 first place record in the ISL West Division. Quincy's next game is Monday at home against Hillsdale at 5:30pm.

Yesterday in baseball, it was a doubleheader sweep for Quincy at home over Lenawee Christian 15-to-6 and 8-to-7. Jake Jodway  was the winning pitcher in the opener. Tristan Haylett had 3 hits and 3 rbi’s while Michael Tesch added 2 hits and 3 rbi’s. Connor Bassage also had 3 rbi’s with one hit and Bryce McCavit had a 2-run homer. In the nightcap, Jake Rider picked up the victory with Tesch earning the save.

Jimmy Strock had 4 hits and 3 rbi’s as the Orioles improved to 6-and-4.

Union City was a winner on the road, beating cross-county rival Bronson 5-to-4. Scott Alwood earned the victory for the Chargers, who are now  11-and-2.

In j-v baseball, Coldwater swept a doubleheader at home over Bronson  20-to-5 and 9-to-4. Kollin Wark was the winning pitcher in Game One. Sawyer Murphy had two doubles and two singles. Shane Dunn, Jesse Mangat, Jake Osborn, and Nick Shaw each had a pair of singles.

In Game Two, Sawyer Murphy went the distance for the victory while Kollin Wark had two singles. Yesterday in track, it was a Big Eight Branch County matchup at Union City, where the host Chargers swept Quincy, winning the boy’s meet 80-to-57 and taking the girl’s meet 79-to-57. In the boy’s meet, Josh Holton led the way for Union City, finishing first in the long jump along with the 100, 200 and 400 meter dashes. Also, Jesse Anderson won both hurdles races. For Quincy, Riley Horn finished first in the 16-hundred and 32-hundred meter runs.

In the girl’s meet, Brooke Johnson was a triple winner for Union City in the high jump and 100 and 200 meter dashes while Jasmine McIntosh won the two hurdles races and Katie Birch finished first in the 800 and 16-hundred meter runs.

In girl’s tennis, Coldwater fell 7-to-1 at Gull Lake with a win at first doubles for Jamie Maxson and Karissa Harrell. In boy’s golf, Coldwater placed 11th out of 19 teams in the Gull Lake Invitational at the Bedford Valley Golf Course. The Cardinals had a team score of 362 while Battle Creek Lakeview placed first at 293. Derek Lutterbeck led Coldwater with an 87. Also in golf, Bronson finished second in a St. Joe Valley meet hosted by Mendon at Island Hills. The Vikings team score was 191 with Centreville first at 177. Jonah Houtz led Bronson with a 44 while Robert O’Rourke and Patrick Brabon each shot 46.

On today’s schedule, in baseball, it’s Coldwater at Jackson Northwest while Union City is at home to finish up a pair of suspended games from last month with Athens and Homer. In softball, Coldwater plays at home against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix. In boy’s golf, Coldwater competes in the Panther Invitational hosted by Parma Western at Arbor Hills while Bronson plays in the Sturgis Invitational at Island Hills. In track, Coldwater is at the Onsted Invitational. And in girl’s tennis, Coldwater has a SMAC West Crossover match while it’s Bronson at Bridgman
