BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - Distracted driving accidents in Branch County numbered 20 last year according to newly released data with only two of the incidents involving drivers using cell phones. The accidents also included drivers ranging in age from 16 to 77 with four of them in their teens and four in their forties.
Fortunately, only one injury was reported and it wasn’t serious, with possible injuries listed in three of the other accidents.
Meanwhile, a new study released by the University of Michigan shows, probably to no great surprise, that parents are often distracted behind the wheel while having young children with them. The research focused on 600 parents who were asked several questions. Those included if parents used appropriate child restraints as mandated by law, if they used a cell phone or another electronic device while driving or practiced person hygiene behind the wheel. The report found nearly 90 percent of those surveyed were distracted by a cell phone or other electronics, and a majority of the drivers said they engaged in four of the ten distractions asked about in the survey.
