Portage Schools To Beef Up Security

PORTAGE, MI (WKZO) -- In the wake of Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon, The Portage Board of Education has voted to spend over 600-thousand dollars improving the security at 11 schools in the district.

The primary goal will be to control the entry of people into the school at the entrances where offices exist, using structural changes and electronic devices.  They aren’t being very specific for obvious reasons.

Dr. Craig Ross says Moorsbridge Elementary will be the most complex project, because it was designed when “school security” meant including bomb shelters.

The projects were not in this year’s improvement plans, but in response to recent events, they decided to put off the demolition of the old administration building and the construction of a parking lot at Angling Elementary, and instead precede with the security improvements.
