ST. JOSEPH, MI (WKZO) -- Congressman Fred Upton is expressing some of the same concerns about the latest leak at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant that critics of the facility have been complaining about for years.
He says he thinks the Covert Township reactor should remain off-line until the tank is replaced or permanently fixed. It’s been leaking for nearly two years at various rates, at one point, drained into buckets in the control room of the nuclear plant.
This past weekend it leaked 90-gallons of radioactive water down a roof, into a drain and into a retaining pond that was flushed into Lake Michigan.
While Palisades and NRC officials said it did not threaten the public health because it was diluted, Upton calls it “unacceptable” and plans to personally inspect the plant. It will apparently take until the end of the week just to drain the tank, and only then can it be inspected.
