City Police Honored

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Police officers across the U.S. are being honored and remembered during this National Law Enforcement Memorial Week, a fact that was in the spotlight at last night’s Coldwater City Council meeting, where Coldwater Public Safety Director Mark Bartell paid tribute to the late Brett Pehrson, who was Director of Public Safety for several years before losing a long battle with cancer in January of 2012.

The yearly memorial events include ceremonies honoring active serving police officers who died while employed and Bartell was present in Lansing at the event where Pehrson was remembered and he escorted Pehrson’s wife and daughter to the State Capital and told the Council they much appreciated the gesture.

Also yesterday, the Police Department presented its Outstanding Service Award for 2012 and it went to Officer Scott Sergeant for a life saving rescue at a near drowning.  Sergeant responded along with a citizen last July at Messenger Lake at the Branch County Memorial Park and provided CPR and according to medical personnel, it was Sergeant’s direct actions that were the foundation for the 20-year old man being able to survive the ordeal.
