Palisades Leak Found

The Palisades Nuclear Plant on the Lakeshore in Covert Michigan.

COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO) -- They have found the cause of the latest leak at the Palisades nuclear plant, and it’s not the same leak as before.

For the second time in two years, the welds on a nozzle in the bottom of a tank filled with irradiated water cracked at the Covert Township nuclear power plant.  They had to drain the 300-thousand gallon tank, which they could only do with the reactor shut down.

Entergy Chief Operating Officer Tim Mitchell says they had to replace several smaller nozzles last year because of a leak in one of those welds.

This time they will be replacing several of the larger nozzles.

He says they are also inspecting hundreds of feet of welds for other cracks.  They may coat this one with a plastic liner or have to replace the whole tank in the end depending on how the repairs go, but nothing is being ruled out. Mitchell they are prepared to do what it takes to fix a leak and get the nuclear reactor going again.

Inside Congressman Fred Upton was denying Entergy’s campaign contributions had bought them any kind of influence.

He says he lives about ten miles from the plant and he will be back for a visit before it reopens.

Kevin Kamps with the group Beyond Nuclear, was out on Blue Star Highway, protesting saying what they need to do is close the plant permanently.
